Point your phone towards an onshore turbine.
Distances are straight-line estimates, not driving distances. Camera labels show approximate directions, not exact visual alignment.
Simulation uses real turbine coordinates and specifications but a fictional observer location. The landscape is an illustration, not a photograph. No live electricity output is shown.
11,022 records from a partial UK onshore dataset, including four documented pilot farms.
The turbine and site browser still works without map tiles.
Browse mapped onshore turbines. Technical information is shown only where the source provides it.
The Flightradar-inspired wind turbine identifier. UK first.
10,952 turbine candidates from ventodyne and OpenStreetMap, plus 70 turbines from four published unit-level asset datasets. Coverage is incomplete, especially in northern Scotland.
The map dataset comes from ventodyne’s merged OpenStreetMap export (ODbL 1.0), alongside 70 original pilot records published by RES/TRIG and Cubico (CC BY 4.0). GPS and compass use device sensors. Matching is geometric, not image recognition.
Directional location matching has been tested with an iPhone, but identity has not yet been checked against an independently confirmed physical turbine. The default viewpoint is simulated; source status can be outdated. The 82,142-row original file was only a partial map export, cutting off northern Scotland. Coastline and Northern Ireland filtering is approximate. Only 799 of 11,022 records currently have manufacturer, model and rated MW. Camera overlays indicate viewing direction and straight-line distance, not precise photographic alignment. Model and owner fields are never inferred from surrounding records.
Merged Global Wind Turbine Dataset by ventodyne (World Wind Turbine Map, turbinemap.ventodyne.com). Data sourced from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0), Marktstammdatenregister (Bundesnetzagentur), U.S. Wind Turbine Database (USGS/LBNL/ACP), Vindbrukskollen (Länsstyrelserna/Energimyndigheten), Energistyrelsen (Denmark), Géorisques (France) and the Canadian Wind Turbine Database (Natural Resources Canada). Our UK extract contains OpenStreetMap records only, combined with 70 independently licensed pilot-unit records (CC BY 4.0). View full data attribution and reuse terms. Download combined UK database (JSON).
Device location, compass readings and camera images stay in your browser. This prototype does not send them to a WindSpot server or store them. Maps, when enabled, request tiles from external providers and may reveal the map area to those services.
